In the first source, the article “Climate Change Impacts New York”, the collaborative set of authors elaborate on the heavy increase of the temperature in New York by day. This is set to warn and inform their central audience - New Yorkers - about the horrible changes that are proven to worsen by the year. The damages that are being done to New York City is not coming from an external source, rather the majority population causing this dilemma are the residents living in New York already.
Next, the second article “Climate Change: How Do We Know?” goes in depth of Planet Earth’s dying condition since the mid 20th century. The set of publishers/ authors speak down upon the actions taken by mankind to get what it is needed at the moment and discard what is needed for the future. Not only for humans, but also for all other organisms around the world that are in jeopardy due to the lack of thought human beings give into the horrible actions committed.
Thirdly, the article “How New York City is Preparing For Climate Change” begins to speak highly of the mayor of New York City and the steps he is taking to resolve the conflict of climate change in such a big city like this. The precautions and laws that are put into place due to Mayor Bill De Blasio are a major up shift in the mentioned city. However, there continue to be many drawbacks and flowing conflicts regarding the needs of today vs the needs for the future.
Lastly, the news article “The Science Behind NYC 2050” from WNBC creates a vivid description from the hypothesis they’ve created in how the Earth will look like physically in terms of weather half a century away from now. Predictions are no joke when it is coming from background research of previous year’s continuous patterns of rising temperatures.
Rhetorical Situation
In the first article, the set of publishers have written this because they are trying to get the message of climate change is bad across to all the people in New York. This article is clearly seen to be most informative to show all the people what is going on in this world. To show the deep cuts and effects that climate change is having on this Earth and we are not doing anything about it. The point that the author is trying to make here is that there is more damage being done than the small amount that the human eye can see at once. The author is purposely describing every aspect going wrong to show how corrupt human beings are and how corrupt we are making this planet by killing an abundance of many other organisms on land and off land. Human behavior towards needs is jeopardizing our society by the minute and no one can see it, so this author decided to open the doors to everyone and let them see it with their own eyes. With the major deforestation occurring, ice caps melting, and tropical animals losing their homes, the author is serious about making a change. Without the efforts of human beings integrating upon this project to be cleaner, nothing will change.
The need for the authors in the second article to speak about the past conditions of the Earth versus the current conditions of the Earth truly sheds darkness on where it’s not supposed to go. Since the mid 20th century, the condition of the weather has decreased immensely and this author is here to elaborate upon that. He mentions that Since the late 19th century, the earth’s temperature has risen 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit due to the major increase in carbon dioxide and other man-made emissions humans out up into the atmosphere. Thus is made to look at what we are doing good vs. bad in this world. What our man made emissions have been coming through from cars to building one’s own company with their new building in the middle of the city causing tremendous amounts of harm and polluting the atmosphere. Just another car being manufactured, another building being made in the city can make all the addition to the killing of the environment and its necessities.
Then, in the blog from Columbia Institute, the author focuses heavily on the frequent amount of extreme weather conditions occurring in New York. It is quite unusual to be having a wild weather storms and flash flood warnings come up on millions of smartphones throughout New York on a weekly basis. The blog post is basically trying to say, how much more of this are the people of New York going to get? We find it absurd for there to be this kind of wild and abnormal behavior but we do not find it absurd for when we drive everyday and pollute the atmosphere with the buildings we also walk into everyday. The blog post is not only to bash on the people but also to uplift the community and shed light on the big changes being taken by higher power from the government with their plans on cleaning the environment and investing about $20 billion towards this new change. The mayor Bill De Blastoff is spoken in highest regards of this situation based on the Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resilience. This is the program started to help the environment be more resilient to climate change and it’s horrible effects by creating cleaner steps and guides in preventing an abundance of carbon dioxide build up and emissions.
In this last article from WNYC, the author is is mainly trying to steer the people away from the hypothesis and predictions he has in store for the people of New York and all other organisms around planet Earth. This gives an idea of how the Earth will look in the year 2050, approximately 3 decades away from present day in 2019. Within the next thirty years, it is implicated for there to be major floods from ice caps melting in the north and the atmosphere becoming so bad it won’t bear much more. As it is interpreted from the author of this news article, the environment will not just get better automatically. The author gives in depth statistical data to reinforce the weak points in society and how those points will eventually be destroyed due to the lack of care.
The Purpose
In, “Climate Change Impacts New York”, the main point is to get the idea of all the destruction that humans are causing to the environment. Through this destruction the author is able to create a clear vision to what they know as the solution. While the solution is straightforward, the people themselves aren’t and their choices are a major influence. Not only that, but one’s financial situation is the primary deal, then it comes time to think about the environment because good choices are expensive choices. The author wants to warn the people and give the people a time cushion to prepare for the near future instead of having to rush and do every last change. Because in this matter, there can not be any rushing. No matter how quickly one will rush to fix the economy in its final days, it will not work because this type of repair takes time.
From “Climate Change: How Do We Know?” the author’s significant point trying to be made is the increase in temperature. The higher it rises, the less time there will be on Earth for all organisms to properly function. While many organisms are already not able to live and function properly, it will be the next few generations of human beings in this world that will be unable to function properly due to extreme heat weather conditions. Even they have research and analysis form NASA saying billions of tons of ice were lost between 1993 and 2016. Showing that our resources are rapidly depreciating.
With the articles having about the same purpose of giving warnings about the near future and looking after the resources we still have, this blog gives people direction and assistance. Steps to follow to maintain a sort of balance in the economy by taking it one step at a time. Columbia University’s blog post speaks of the Mayor of New York and his initiative to create a better and improved, gas free economy as much as possible. With putting legal filters on building and automotive emissions in the atmosphere, Mayor Bill De Blasio has taken a big step and is also leading many industry owners to follow in his footsteps.
With WNYC and their latest news post, it is clear that they want to instill some kind of minor fear into the people. By doing this, it will allow the people to take this situation much more seriously. Giving predictions in the near future in about 3 decades gives people all the time to think about what they will do and what will happen in the next 30 years if left untreated.
The Audience
For the majority of the sources above, the audience is primarily targeted towards the New Yorkers/general public. It doesn’t take one old woman/man to make a change regarding this scenario;it takes a group of individuals with a wide variety of age range to put the pieces together and fix the environment. Because repairing the environment for climate change is a collaborative effort and without the young, the elders can’t do it. And without the elderly people guiding the young, nothing can happen. This is why the audience falls under a broad spectrum, so whoever is reading the online articles regarding this situation with blogs, news articles, and regular online articles can make a change. However, the government and their higher officials are sometimes put as the center for the audience because they have money, power, and fame. All components to which society favors and to which society will majorly benefit from.
The Genre
The majority of the genres are newspaper based, online blog based, or news based. For the many newspaper genre based articles, they are there to inform and go in detail about climate change. These genres are meant for the general public to properly read and not have to analyze too much because they’re like any other article. The readers are not trying to understand if the words have more than one meaning to it or if the situation is helpless. These websites have lots of analytics about climate change and the exact change in weather by the degree since the mid 20th century. These genres are straightforward, and in detail. As for the online blog article made by Columbia University, the information here is similar to those of online websites, but have more analysis than statistical data to share to the public.
The Stance
Even though the four sources have some slight differences in their genre, they all agree and have the same stance on climate change. Whatever can be done should be done. In this society, the world will keep evolving, and if the way that society evolves is not in line with the way that society should run, then that option is not the best one. Yes, making your own business and building a brand new structure may sound brilliant and fill the current needs of one’s personal life, yet it destructs the economical life of society in the long run for it is an addition to emissions in our atmosphere. The gases and negative effects upon society will keep planet earth in the short run of existence. Not one source had disagreed and clearly stated that climate change is good and that there is not much humans have left to do. Not one. Thus, climate change is not a desired matter for the economy. Especially in a major city like New York, this is not to be messed with and taken lightly, rather taken seriously and steps taken towards it to resolve this issue one day at a time.
